IEC and GeM serve different commercial purposes. They are not interchangeable, even though both may appear on a business expansion checklist.

IEC for international trade

An Importer Exporter Code is used for import and export activities. Verify the currently applicable government requirements for your type of trade.

GeM for government procurement

The Government e-Marketplace provides a procurement platform. Seller registration is only one step; catalogue quality and bid eligibility can affect participation.

Choose based on your business objective

If you plan to buy or sell across borders, ask about IEC. If you want to offer products or services to public-sector buyers, investigate GeM registration and the specific buyer requirements.

  • IEC: international import/export use cases
  • GeM: participation in applicable government procurement
  • GST and Udyam: may be relevant depending on the business and transaction
