Everything you need to know before you start importing or exporting.
What is IEC
The Import Export Code is a 10-digit number issued by the DGFT. You need it to import or export goods and services from India.
Who needs it
Any business planning to trade internationally needs an IEC. It is based on your PAN and is usually valid for life, though you must update your details every year.
Documents needed
PAN, Aadhaar, address proof of the business, a cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and a passport size photo.
Next steps
After the IEC, get GST registration and open a current account that supports foreign exchange. You may also want to register on GeM to sell to government buyers.
